Japanese House & Garden
Design/Build with East Wind, Inc.
This project involved a major remodel and add-on to an exquisitely crafted, beautiful Japanese home in Marin County. The house was over 15 years old and no gardens or landscaping had ever been developed. Along with the home remodel and addition, our clients wanted an enclosed entry courtyard with a stream, water garden, and mature plantings.
Tight, perched soils required massive subsurface drainage. The old driveway was removed and replaced with a combination of exposed aggregate concrete and colored pavers. We brought in hundreds of tons of boulders to create the garden skeleton, to revet slopes, and to build the water garden. We used flagstone to build terraces, walkways, and steps.
Dozens of beautiful select specimen trees and shrubs were brought in and planted. Additionally, we installed landscape lighting, irrigation, underground utilities, and a water garden with a series of falls and pools that one moves through to enter the home and—even more importantly—provides an intimate enclosure to gaze back upon from within the home.
This was a wonderful project of collaboration with our clients and East Wind, the superlative West Coast Japanese home builders.
